Berberis aquifolium: Oregon Grape Root

Indications
  • Mainly used to treat skin conditions (psoriasis, eczema)
Preparations
  • Infusion: 1tsp, 1 c water, 10min, PRN
  • Tincture/extract: 1/2 - 1 tsp, BID

Astragalus menbranaceus: Astraglas

Parts used
  • Root

Indications
  • Cough and colds
  • Ideal herb for anyone susciptible to illness (immuno-compromised)
  • Known to stimulate the body's production of interferon (Use w/Hep C)

Preparations
  • Infusion: 1tsp (or 1/2 stick or dry root), 1 c. water
  • Tincture: 1:4, 2-4 mil BID
  • Decoction, 1 tsp root, 1 c water, simmer 10-15 min, BID

Allium Sativa: Garlic

Parts Used
  • Root
Indications
  • Increase circulation
  • Promote gastric secretions
  • Gargle for sore throat
  • Used to help treat infection
  • Reduces vaginal colonization of GBS
Preparations
  • Decoction: 1 clove, 1 c water
  • Infusion: Grate fresh clove and infuse in carrier oil
  • Poultice (external use): Crust or mince
  • Bolus: Insert bruised clove in vagina. Sometimes helpful to thread with dental floss for easy removal in morning.
  • Tincture/Extract: 1:1 30-60 drops, 1-3 xday
Contraindications
  • May cause GI disturbance in sensitive individuals
  • Should be avoided by individuals with hot constitution
  • Acute inflammation
  • Insomnia
  • Dehydration

Achillia Millefolium: Yarrow

Parts Used
  • Flowers, Leaves
Indications
  • Indigestion, Appetite loss
  • Gall bladder disorders, liver disorders
  • Skin inflammation
  • Pelvic cramps and menstrual problems
  • Tincture can be used as repellent
Preparations
  • Infusion: 1tsp, 1 c water
  • Tincture/Extract: 1:1 (fresh) 10-30 dr, 1-3 x day
  • Tincture/Extract: 1:4 (dry), 2-4 ml, 1-3 x day
  • Bath: 4 tsp/gallon
Contraindications
  • Pregnancy: Emmenagogue and aborifacient properties
